The single upper chain is the later model cars if it was a 97 it would most definitely be the single row, earlier had the dual.
This is the kit i used when i did my single chain row vr.

Hey guys
So I'll be looking at changing the timing chain on the Vento real soon but can someone shed some light as to what sort of timing chains I would need to get if I want to change them on my VR6?
There's a "single upper chain" and "dual upper chain"? I'm only having a guess in thinking that the dual upper chain is for later model VR6's i.e OBDII?
The vento is a '95 but the VR6 is from a '97 golf as far as I'm aware?
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated!
Cheers!

Ah cheers mate. Whats the difference between this one :

and the one you got? Is it just because the link above uses all Genuine VW parts?
ECS is probably the way to go, engine is later model, if in doubt use engine number as reference (ECS will have engine number ranges for the different kits). I can dig a picture up with the rocker cover off if you like, won't be until tomorrow night though.
Yeah that is the genuine kit, not really necessary imo. There is also a "ultimate" timing chain kit which comes with new hardware for the guides, again no really necessary as all the pins and bolts should be fine to be reused.

Ah awesome thanks Joe!
That maroon MK3 looked the goods back in its heyday! Quite clean!
on a side note, how was ECS on postage?
