Thrust Bearing??

Occasionally on take off, I hear a sound. Not grinding, not whizzing. no idea how to describe it!!! lol.

Anyway, I believe it is my thrust bearing.

Is there any precautions I can take to prolong the life of it?
Is it correect that it is an engine out job to replace?

Any other info on the topic?

I think that's the bearing that fudged up when my mate's VR had to be rebuilt. The bloke stopped talking to me for some reason so I don't know 100%, but it seems right..

If its engine out and I'm talking to Seb i'll find some way to buy more things then I can afford whiler he is looking at the car !! lol

Are you running a VR6, the bearing is inside the bell housing.

On the 2 litres it's behind the green VW symbol on the end of the box but it runs in the gearbox oil so I don't think it would make much noise.

Indeed, tis a VR mate. Does this mean I would only have to unbolt it from the mounts, as well as the box and "raise" the centre in as way to create enough space underneath to get at the bell-housing. I don't know FWD that well. YET!

The engine can stay in. You need to remove the driveshafts, remove the starter and disconnect the gear linkages. Unbolt the slave cylinder. Unbolt the gearbox while supporting the engine. Lower the engine and box. The box then comes off to the left of the car.

You need to rotate the back of the box up so the rh drive flange clear the back of the block.

I have done a VR personally but I dont see it being loads different to other cable box VW setups.

Probably an afternoons work.

Not a full description but if you have done an engine out of something else then you are qualified to do the box off.

Consider repalcing the clutch if you do pull it down.

I'd find somewhere with one in stock. Start the job and check out the clutch, go get the new one of you need it.

You need an M8 spline drive to undo the driveshafts. Unbolting the bottom swivel/ball joint and the 30mm hub nut to get the shafts out is the way that I do it.
