I think that's the bearing that fudged up when my mate's VR had to be rebuilt. The bloke stopped talking to me for some reason so I don't know 100%, but it seems right..

Occasionally on take off, I hear a sound. Not grinding, not whizzing. no idea how to describe it!!! lol.
Anyway, I believe it is my thrust bearing.
Is there any precautions I can take to prolong the life of it?
Is it correect that it is an engine out job to replace?
Any other info on the topic?

Just take the easy way and get some opinions first, but will certainly be talking to some professionals. Ta mate
The engine can stay in. You need to remove the driveshafts, remove the starter and disconnect the gear linkages. Unbolt the slave cylinder. Unbolt the gearbox while supporting the engine. Lower the engine and box. The box then comes off to the left of the car.
You need to rotate the back of the box up so the rh drive flange clear the back of the block.
I have done a VR personally but I dont see it being loads different to other cable box VW setups.
Probably an afternoons work.

Not a full description but if you have done an engine out of something else then you are qualified to do the box off.
Consider repalcing the clutch if you do pull it down.
I'd find somewhere with one in stock. Start the job and check out the clutch, go get the new one of you need it.
You need an M8 spline drive to undo the driveshafts. Unbolting the bottom swivel/ball joint and the 30mm hub nut to get the shafts out is the way that I do it.

Gearbox out was a headache but the rest felt like a breeze
If you're going to attempt it yourself I'd be very willing to join in and learn a few MORE things along the way mate!
EDIT: Oh, and Mischa still has my flywheel bolt tools if you need those. We broke some crappy ones so I borrowed some off a VW worker heh. Still gotta give them back to him one day...

If it only does it ocassionally, I`d drive around the noise and see if it gets any worse before spending hard earned $$s.
