taking apart the gearbox mk3 gl manual

hi guys im rebuilding my gearbox and never dealt with vw's before iv always worked on jap cars and have to say they r much easier to work on. anyways iv got my box out and wanna take the housing apart but i cant get the housing off around the diff, the shafts that r stiking out the 1ns that screw to the drive shafts arent coming out. i wanna know wer i have to hit them to take them off??
