    Supercharge/turbocharge

    Hello All,

Just signed up VW watercooled today at work... ( im beggin to get fired)

Just wondering if anyone can point me in the right direction... i want to either supercharge or turbocharge my Golf VR6. i have spoken to a few specialist here in Melb. and they gave me mixed info.

One tells me to do a supercharge as its less parts, less expensive, and turbocharging will create too much eat in my engine...

On the other hand, another garage tells me that turbocharging is better as supercharing the VR6 will only create headaches for me...

saying that, i was just thinking of importing a whole engine+trannie from USA or sumthing and just doing a whloe swap... i believe it will be the most cost effective... and less hasssles.

ill be posting pics of my golf tonight, once i get home...

Looking forward to hearing from all you guys girls out there!!

    Thanks!
    Ben

Howdy Ben and welcome to VR6 ownership
It really depends on what you want and what you're prepared to pay for. Supercharging in my opinion is an easier install and less stressful on your engine. On the other hand you will always get more power from a turbo conversion and if you want to get crazy power turbo is the way to go. Importing an engine and trans from the US would be huge $$ and I can't see it being cost effective, unless you have contacts in shipping etc.
Personally I would go supercharger, but this is just my opinion, I'm sure more will chime in with different opinions

you might want to talk to mk1turbo79 about it. he's had the supercharger and he now has a turbo setup.

not that ive done it but ive heard in a few places that superchargers are more simple. but i dunno i havnt done it.

talk to mk1turbo79, he'll have some good recommendations for ya

if your thinkin about importing an engine and tranny from the States, once youve figured out which kind of charger you want, why not buy a s/c or turbo kit from america. i hear kinetics is a good kit for turbo and either VF or Vortech for a supercharger kit.

    keep us posted yeah?

oh yeah my choice would be supercharger too. probably just got everyone has a turbo. cos the power is more linear and that whine is absolutely wicked. i think you also lose the vr6 "grr" when you turbo, to an extent, where as with the supercharger you dont. FROM WHAT IVE READ.

that being said, turbo lag is like foreplay!

If you just want a good improvement in power, put a blower on it. No heat problems, no running oil lines, cheaper, and best of all.. NO LAG!

I was doing a heap of research into turnbocharging localy, and the biggest headache is the computer. there are no plugins for it, and you will have to go standalone. Big cost. The imported kits come with re-writen computers, But watch for Left to right incompatibilitys

With the right turbo, and the standard compression, you won't see any noticable lag. But heat will still be an issue, as will making the motor not detonate with the highish VR6 compression.

i suppose a turbo system has the potential for being more fuel economic. because of the lack of parasitic power. and also if you try stay out of boost it probably would use too much more than stock. i suppose.

that was my thinking. And if you can keep the stock compresion, it should still make a normal amount of power while off boost.

Supercharge It. No need to modify the engine.

    Vortex supercharger kit.

    Bahnbrenner website is useful.

If you turo you need to pull the engine apart to lower the comp. Supercharger kicks in earlier too which is what the vr6 needs.

    Good Luck.

    Vortex supercharger kit.

Boost is Boost, You can Turbo it and run up to about 8 or 9 PSI.
Even with a Supercharger if you are running high boost you will stress the engine
