Not sure, depends on wheels too, in theory you could go fairly large, but in reality 14"s are going to offer stuff all room for decent sized callipers and rotors. The only experience with 14s I've had is using them on a Golf shell so it could get dumped. Cheapish upgrade would be running a VR6 set up, or a seat Ibiza one if you want to stay 4X100.

You wont be able to run vr6 front brakes under 14's. Just had a look. Youd have to buy 5x100 14's too which I doubt youd want to do anyway if you were buying new wheels

well i was thinking if im going to get steelies wider i might go bigger, but just thinking if i should go 15s or 16s..
then i look at upgrading the brakes, oh and btw went to the wreckers the other day i asked the guy how much for the vr6 brakes and they guy told me that i cant change then due to the vr6's having diff suspension set up, so anyone tell me WTF the guy was one about??

To run the vr6 brakes I think you'll to basically run all vr6 gear in the front, like drive axles, control arms, hub etc etc.

    Those steelies are awesome!

Yeah pretty much. If you have discs in the back then its as easy as swapping them for vr6 discs, as the calipers and all are the same. Up front you'll need everything from a vr6 except for subframe. So control arms, tie rods, steering nuckels, bearings, brakes, ball joints, drive axles etc etc. It will all bolt up to the subframe you already have (they are the same) and to the transmission and all.

Too much poke. You would need around et20 back and et25 front.
