I think the clusters are a pretty common item that fails unfortunately :/ Will probably need to swap in another one.
Hey fellas
I have a bit of a problem, my speedo has died. Everything else in the dash works just fine, except speed and revs. Does anybody know what could be causing it and how I might be able to fix it?? Not really keen on waiting until after easter to get it up to golfwagen :\

I was hoping that wasn't the case, since its only speed and revs - not everything :\

Can you just swap the speedo and rev gauges and retain the rest of your cluster? Thats what I did in my E30 so I could keep the right Kays
Try disconnecting battery It might work again for a little while longer.
And Im sure you have to buy a hole cluster its all one part.
New one From VW is around $700+
It's Hard to find a second hand cluster with decent Ks on it,Most 200,000ks +
I believe there is a way you can set the kms with some software so that its right.
Theres a write up on the vortex about a way you can fix some of the clusters by resoldering some things. If youre handy with a soldering iron it would be worth searching for that and giving it a try.

I am pretty good with a soldering iron actually, might give it a whirl, thanks!
Is there any possibility it could be fuse related at all?

If you can find the VSS (Vehicle Speed Sensor) a 3 wire clip on the top back of the gearbox near the reverse light switch and chekc that! I had the same problem a while back and it was that was loose.
Sometime a faulty ignition switch can case it too
To get the cluster out is pretty easy to check, check the forums for proceedure
Give me a shout if you're still having probs with your speedo. I got a couple of recon units here in stock OR can get yours repaired. Thanks, steve@waeuro.com.au 0449000660
