    nice Steve, nice!

though have you spoken with your engine builder about using the +2mm valves on intake and exhaust? I never went with that set up because they would just about touch each other with no gap in between, this will cause the seals to wear out prematurely? Just what I was told thats all.

and some usefull info, the sc kit was passed on for a reason, it was dissapointingly slow, if you go fi go turbo . . .

Are you doing your clutch? and why not go forged pistons now whilst its apart? whats the advantage of the euro 82mm's?

    sorry for the long reply

yeah tim ive only heard of people having 2 letters after the number, never without, but i guess im just special like you said! win!
yeah i spoke to the engnine builder about the valves, though i dont think many people have enough experience with these heads to know stuff like that about it. that being said he will be putting in new valve seats obviously because they are over 1mm oversize, but people on vortex have often used 42mm intake and i think 39mm exhaust (if my memory serves me right, which it probably doesnt. probably wrong on the exhaust) but i know people have done atleast one mm bigger on intake and im pretty sure a little bigger on exhaust

do you mean that particular kit was disappointingly slow?
ill be having a look at my clutch when i have it all out, and ill probably just replace it with a stock one because when i did timing chains about a year ago, it looked a little low, so ill probably end up replacing it. whether stock or a little better i havent decided yet, but im workin on that. i hear the stock one is fairly good anyway even for low boost FI.

i didnt go with forged pistons for three reasons, first was i dont have the desire to go through gear boxes like beer bottles, so if i do go FI it wont be high boost so there wasn't really any need to go forged since even a stock bottom end can take well in excess of 300hp for a while. second, just added to the first reason, was cost. OEM cast 82mm euro pistons were around 500 USD, where as any size forged ones were atleast 850 USD. and third was, i wasnt going to wait until i had the engine apart to figure out whether or not i needed bigger pistons because that would take another few weeks to order and get here and i dont have the time and i cant be bothered waiting, so i just went ahead and ordered 1mm oversize pistons....yeah thats pretty much it!

so i had driven down to Rye and Dromana in Victoria for new years eve weekend and i realized, the money and time i am spending and im going to spend on this build is totally worth it. my engine as it stands is absolutely gutless. just has no power. maybe a little more powerful than my old 2.0 golf 3, but not much more. sounds ACE but its all bark, no bite.
that was actually one reason for doing this anyway.
another was, i did a compression test a while back and found some disappointing results. they were as follows:
    1 2 3
    180 175 180psi
    4 5 6
    185 110 60psi

so as you can see, 5 and especially 6 were bloody pathetic. could have probably just don the head, but why not do the block while im there and make it technically a 2.9 litre. though i dont really like calling it a 2.9 because with 82mm pistons its only like 2861cc so only barely a 2.9 but whatever, i suppose it is.
wow this was way longer than i though ti was going to be, sorry to those of you with better things to do.

monday i should be getting the aircon degassed at work, and coilovers wound back up so i can get it in the back shed, and start tearing into it that night. see how we go!

yeh, i've read on the tex also of people using the +2 on both ports and I told that to my builder but he didn't want to for various reasons that sounded fine to me. All good though, see how it goes

and yeh that kit was on a corrado up here I believe and wasn't to flash

and fair call on the pistons and clutch.

Good luck with the build, it's awsome to see more and more people investing into our mk3's
