thanks for bringing that up because I was just about to ask, so even if I do find a good, clean Mk3 with log books, service history etc but it has 200xxxkm's it won't become a money pit will it? This is one of the main reasons why dad doesn't want me buying a 13y/o+ car but hey parts/servicing is cheap, is it not?

I do all my own servicing (ie oil and filter changes etc), changed suspension over in it, most things are generally pretty easy to do once to gain access to the stupid VW designed part! haha. Make sure chains and heater core are done minimum and you should be fine with the rest.

Ah thats sweet! Yh, I'll hopefully be doing most of the work on my car (I want to learn! This is all new to me!) and I'm hoping my uncle is of use seeing as though he knows a fair bit about cars (but not much about german cars). We'll see what happens.

Even make sure of the chains/heater core in a GL/CL? or just the VR?

Ill admit the 1.8ltr is no power house but with P-plate laws, hoons, petrol prices and the simple set up I can never complain about mine. Just rev the tits of it...

I must admit for what it is, I was actually suprised with the 1.8. Was expecting it to be slower then it is. It has a decent bit of tourqe down low and always suprises me when going up a hill just after leaving home, where most cars have to drop down to first (unless you take the sharp blind corner really quickly) it happily pulls pretty hard in second.

And yeah, a vr6 can be cheap to maintain if you're lucky, but you have to keep in mind that at any minute it could need $1500 in repairs and that you cant drive it until its fixed up. Still, very much worth it in my opinion if you love cars and want something thats a bit of a sleeper.

Again, I don't mind a 1.8L because and engine swap will always be an option with the years to come but again, with a VR I don't want to wake up one morning to an empty wallet. So for now, CL and GL are the only two options.
