The bigger the diameter the longer it has to take to and the more power it needs to complete that revolution in the same time as if it was a 16" tyre. So the tyre takes longer to move and thats where the power loss comes from only slightly though.

If you choose the right tyres, the diameter will remain very similar. I went up two inches and my effective gearing has changed less than 1%.

If a car no longer pops wheelies, it's probably because the new wheels are heavier and the new tyres are stickier.

Tread is what makes the car stick to the ground make sure you get something good... Perhaps continentals or Michelins?
