    Removing rear muffler

    Hi guys,

My situation is I want to run either a pipe or smaller muffler/resonator in place of where the current rear muffler is for aesthetic purposes, as I have smoothed over the exhaust cut-out on my bumper.

Has anyone with a 2.0L done this before, and if so, how does it sound? I've searched around and most have said they liked the sound of a removed muffler, but loud exhausts is definitely not my thing. Is there such a replacement muffler/resonator that has a slim profile, that will somewhat give a mild exhaust note? I'm thinking of just heading to a local exhaust workshop and picking out a small generic muffler/resonator. They should do the trick, right?

    Any help will be appreciated.

    Not my pics:

I have a hotdog' rear muffler with twin tips on my golf, and its pretty much almost a straight through muffler and in my opinion sounds good without being loud, its a helluva lot better sounding than the standard ones. The 2.0l's honestly don't sound that great loud, they're are some shockers on youtube and I'm glad that I've got just the rear changed with a proper ait intake. The muffler makes the car sound a bit throatier with a nice little burble on idle.

I did at one point want to get the resonator removed, but on advice from the exhaust shop that my car was just about on the legal limit apparently for noise and removing it would just draw more negative attention to the car. So yeah, its both cheap and legal, definately a good value for money mod on the 2.0l's...

I could probably come around tomorrow and give you a demo if you like.

I remember the tone on your car! I didn't mind it, and definitely wouldn't mind it on mine... do you remember where you got it?

I had it done at Midas Fairfield, but I got tips as well and it cost me $180 which I thought was ok. I'd just go down to any exhaust place and just say you want a rear hotdog muffler, shouldn't cost more than $90, with the break down being $40 for the muffler $40-$60 for the labour.

Although I'm still not so sure about what tips you would run and if it would be possible to use the oem ones ... despite the fact that they're a "sporty" twin tip style.

Or better yet, just not have any, not sure how much difference there would be in sound but I'd doubt it'd be much if any. And if your not looking for nice tips and want to hide the exhaust anyway, I just would get the muffler and leave it as it was.
