Unhappy Randomly stalling MK3 Golf GL

    Hi everyone!
We are having a little trouble with our '95 MK3 Golf GL.
It stalls randomly, then restarts randomly as well, sometimes straight away, sometimes many minutes later.
I have read through the posts on this forum already, but am not having much luck.
    We have replaced the following;
    Dizzy sensor
    Both crank sensors
    ECU relay
    Fuel pump relay
We have had it in the workshop and connected to the computer when it has stalled and, there are no error codes coming up.
Had the ECU out and apart to visually inspected the connections for obvious breaks, nothing there.
The fuel pump is running as expected.
There are no vacuum hoses off.
Repaired a leak in the crankcase breather hose, actually replaced with a catch can adaptor from the states and a length of tubing.
I am at a loss to figure it out, and can’t afford to have it in at the workshop any more, as I have already run up over $500 in bills.
I hope that someone might have some other options to try.
    Thanks.

Pretty sure thay don't have a MAF. They use a MAP in the ECU. It definitely sounds like the ECU relay but you say you have changed it.

I would have started with the coil.... try swapping in a known good one.

That and/or check the rotor in the dizzy for cracks/damage.

Had behavior just like this on a 2E engined Toledo once which turned out to be a broken rotor (which wasnt obvious when you looked at it).

2L mk3 engine has a MAF on the outlet of the airbox. I think it will run without it by defaulting to the warmup map but its crap. Definately wont stall randomly though - and they are also nearly bulletproof.

    Correct,
Sounds electrical, Coil Pak,Dissy Cap or Rotor Button, as mentioned,
Did you only replace Crank Angle Sensor or just the Knock Sensors.
Had a friends car, which had the same fault,
when the engine got to operating temp, it would stall,
after 10 or 15 minutes it would start with no issues at all.
Had a crack in the Rotor Button strip, hence the reason why it failed when at operating temp,
crack would open further and break the circuit.
Only faults that might show are the Crank Angle Sensor or Knock Sensor.

    Thanks guys.
Hadn't thought of the coil. (DUH)
The mechanics had checked the rotor and the cap and assured me that they are fine....
The car seems to stall when ever it wants to. Had it on the highway last night (not many people to annoy), so it was at running temp for about 25 minutes and then it stalled at 110kmh. Had to wait about 5 minutes, then it ran fine again.
Then this morning when cold, stalled after about 20secs.
Haven't actually replaced the knock sensor yet, but yes all the other sensors have been replaced, partly why the bill is so high at the moment.
