I would put money on the ignition timing being out or the timing belt being incorrectly set.
Take it back to who did it for you. The poor starting may be related.

Hey all,
I have a 1996 CL golf that has just hit 200,000km and is causing me some grief of late
I have just spent $1800 on it as the front right wheel hub and bearings were stuffed, Distributor has been replaced, new leads and spark plugs have been installed, replaced one of the engine mounts as it had snapped and had the timing belt done.... however i'm facing some problems.
Problem 1:
It has some problems starting.... most of the time it will turn over with no hassles but on the odd occasion (normally when I'm running late) it wont start unless i put my foot flat on the accelerator and just keep turning it over. this one has been happening since I got the car 2 years ago.
Problem 2:
Just had the timing belt replaced and now i get a constant rattle when I put my my foot on the accelerator fast. If I ease my foot onto the accelerator I have no issues however i don't wish to drive like a granny. that thing that I don't get is this only happens if I'm moving... if the car is stationary and i do the same thing.... no rattle I've done some looking around and have read some stuff that leads me to believe that this noise could be related to the timing belt but I'm honestly not sure.
Problem 3:
It idles pretty rough and gurgles bit.
any ideas or help would be greatly appreciated!!

If it's audibly pinging that much (which is your rattle), best get it sorted ASAP... and find a new mechanic while you're at it!
