    you push the key into the ignition barrel, you turn it, and the engine goes VROOOOOMMMMM. (depending on the exhaust).

    Nothing else..

    The barrel Im pretty sure has a spring in it that springs back after the car starts to disengage the starter motor .

    Whats broken here is the ignition switch which basically activates the solenoid on the starter motor


    some cars have the steering wheel lock in the barrel as well

    Although I have seen ignition barrels wear as well , but start with ignition switch

    Yeah you are right but its the ign switch that has that spring action you are talikng about , and is like you say most likey gonna be that. Seen an A4 come in and drove for miles with the starter on!!!!!!!!!! Bloody white hot when we got to it man, knackered it of course

    I tried starting the car a few times just then, seems to work well now ...

    What does replacing the ignition cost?
