I'll take a photo of where mine is when i get a chance, cant get much cooler than where it is.
I don't mind putting a head shield there, but the thing is I see logic when the car is running and cold air through the car anyways. But have also seen and felt a a VR6 with hand hand placed in the heat shield side and out side of heat shield, there is a difference for sure. But when the car is running, air flows through anyways.
Well.. to put a shield will give me another little project to do, probably one day I will do it not becasue I was persuded but out of bordom, honestly I am happy with the money spend and the power gain already.. at least with out a shield it does not/ will not have an adverse effect right.
By the way what is a ping anyways?
if you put cheap ass fuel in a golf, it doesn't like it - and it tells you... if you try to pus it at all you will hear a pinging noise coming from the engine. I use 95 octane minimum but I try to put 98 in when I can. The difference is astounding.
Is the power gain really that much? Is a drilled airbox decent in comparison to a pod filter for the money spent?
Hi Louis,
Pinging is a sort of rattling sound you hear usually at high load and lower in the rev range when certain conditions exist. There are a number of causes, most often fuel of a lower octane rating than required but it can also be caused by other factors such as incorrect ignition timing or a severe build up of carbon in the combustion chamber etc.
What is actually happening is premature combustion i.e. the fuel burns before the piston gets to the top of the combustion stroke. It is a condition that should be avoided at all costs as it can be very destructive to your engine.
Cheers
