If its leaking water, find where its leaking from and go from there. I've never worked on a 2.0 and dont know where common leaks are, but these cars are getting old so could be a perished hose or a cracked thermostat housing or something. If its really pouring out it shouldnt be hard to track down

is the car just losing water or overheating aswell ?

fill it up and watch were its leaking from, if nothing is visible from the engine bay check your carpets mate id say you could have a cracked heater core ???

It's losing water like overnight, which leads to overheating.

I think i shall wait for my father to return and give his assesment, i may try and use as a reason to justify buying a 16v from england
