    overcharging...

i tested the alternator and it was overcharging...it ruined the battery.

So i changed the battery with a new one and bought another good condition alternator and its still over charging...i am checking this at the battery and both times it read 17.5 at idle and went up when reved. Any ideas on what it is or what i should do?

Two things that can cause this are:

-Faulty voltage regulator. I assume these alternators are internal reg? Did you get a NEW alternator, or just another one??

-Crank pulley is too big or the alternator pulley is too small. Quite simply, this will spin the alternator too fast (overdrive it) and it will over charge your battery. Did you check to see if it has the correct diameter pulleys??

it was a second hand one yes. And i had no way of testing it before i put it in so maybe it was buggered...do vr6's have external regs or rectifiers?

And for pulley size it came straight off a vr6 so it would be the same...and both were charging at the same rate. And the reg should hold the voltage...shouldn't it?

Yeah the reg regulates the voltage to 14 volts or what ever it is.. If it's buggered, your alternator can overcharge.

Make sure the crank pulley is correct. Measure someone elses and compare them or get a measurement.

Could the pulley be for a 4 cylinder engine or something like that?? I'm not sure. I don't know what the differences are..

You could always bite the bullet, fork out some cash and take it to a good auto electrician to check it out for you...

ok what do you think it would cost for an auto elec 2 have a look? I'm afraid if i fork out the cash for a new alternator the same thing could happen if all the wiring is stuffed... I will measure the pulley on another car 2 moz. Worth taking it 2 get fixed properly? I would think so...but how much cash? Lol

it should cost you less than $200 to fix at an auto electrician

get it done and save yourself a headache - you have a 2 to fix, maybe you can sell the other?
