The New VR6 - Showroom project.

    Hi All,

New addition to our already golf infested family. Black Magic 1997 VR6. As original as they get. The only thing I can tell apart is that the callipers have been sprayed R32 Blue (which i personally reckon looks pretty cool). Original black leather and it even has the dealer 'Golf' keyring and spare key... The Aim will be to get it as close to Showroom appearance and condition as possible, it's not too far off. Only mods will be a new head unit and maybe roof racks and a thule fairing.

Main issues are mechanical. Needs the dreaded timing chain done (any advice greatly appreciated), Motor mounts have gone and a couple of leaks here and there.

Will be looking for lots of advice along the way so share any opinions

I reckon these cars are worth saving... I really hope you do keep it nice and standard... I am trying to get mine back to that sort of condition. I have spent months chasing , badges, grilles etc etc and I can't tell you how many wrecking yards I have been to chasing those mudflaps alone Good luck, looks great.

VR6's are already a cult car, but theres few owners that seem to be willing to bring one back to concourse condition. All the best on your project, will be watching!

    Nice !!

Well if you really are gonna restore it, I think you should find a dealership that's been around for ages an one that use to sell these cars.
If it helps, my vr was bought from Austral Motors, Newstead, QLD.
Not sure if that's a VW dealership though.

Those parts you listed in another thread, I'm prity sure it'd be cheap from the dealership except the engine mounts an brake rotors.

How come it's not registered ?

Oh an I'm sure you'll catch the mod bug soon

Yeh the bloke was a bit anal about the car so ALL, I mean ALL the parts he bought were from the dealership. He said Newstead is the best option though so i'll be back there soon enough. I've got a bunch of small parts that I need to get anyway so hopefully they won't be too pricey.

Well theres a big story behind it but basically we originally agreed on a price and then he went off to get the roadworthy and did a mechanical inspection and found out there were heaps of issues with it so sold it to me cheap (too cheap...) without fixing them so we decided unregistered was fair. He got about 500 bucks back on the plates and CTP and it only took me a day to get it re registered (I came accross a... lets say casual... mobile rwc bloke.). BTW the heaps of issues were those ones i listed in the parts thread haha.

The end result is that I've got a beautiful car with about the only big thing being the timing chain.

Speaking of timing chains, I'm keen to get it done soon and will hopefully get jmac to have a listen for me to tell me if its URGENT. If so, he told me he can't fit me in till january so has anyone got a mechanic or a mate that is really good with them? Would be looking at doing the flywheel and clutch depending on how much money ive got in the bank!

Nooooooo not the mod bug It'd almost be criminal to do anything to it. The only thing not original is the head unit and two rear speakers I just put in!

Austral are the most over priced and under customer appreciating dealership i have spoken to in my opinion.

Your best bet would be to go to someone independent (Jmac or Prestige and Performance) or if you really really want a dealership then go to one outside of the CBD area.

Quote from Bryan Byrt was $2550 which isn't too bad. Comet have quoted $1795 but they're a wait till january as well. Might hold off for Jmac.

Big step back today though. Got my cruise control working and all was going well until I got rear ended in Mansfield... Just sitting there at an intersection and this girl in her holden astra 'didn't see me'. Needless to say I was absolutely devastated considering the car has never been in a crash before and it was in such beautiful nic. RACQ won't do an inspection until January so I've got at least 4 bloody weeks to wait until something can be done. It's depressing seeing it so smashed up

    :'(
