New VR6 or some other golf...

I'm looking at picking up a VR6 to replace my Mk GLD. (Either that or a MK2 GTi).

    http://www.carsales.com.au/used-cars...ype=2&trecs=97

Anyway, it has a couple of issues:

Heat Core leaks (has been disconnected, but needs to be replaced).
Syncro for 2nd is a little Lazy, fine when driving nice, doesn't sync properly when your hard on it

Coil pack is also dead but is being replaced before it's sold.

Haven't been able to start it or drive it because of the coil, but for the sake of this argument lets say the rest of the car is all good.

Is it worth spending the $7k then repairing those couple of things, or should I just look elsewhere?

I know the car, it goes hard.
Needs a new gearbox really, 2nd always crunches.
Has new engine mounts and seats, without ripped bolsters.
AC is freezing, and working which is unusual for a VR6.
Its a nice colour, paint is good and wheels look good.
    Drives nice.
    Up to you.

A quick chat to Matt from Camden GTi and it seems it would be round the $2500 or so mark to fix up the gearbox and buy the heater core (which I would then think about putting in myself, but most likely end up not doing )

I know the guy wont take less than the $7k he's asking, lucky to get $500 off I'd say. So it seems that vehicle is out and I need to keep looking at other things. Mind you even at roudn the $9k mark it's still not a bad buy considering those parts would all be nice and new. Just a little more than I want to spend right now.

It's a new week, so maybe some new toys will come up

An important question: have you driven a VR6 before? ever?

They are a absolute HOOT, $7k plus some repairs is pretty good (its basically what I paid for mine).

Also if golf loon knows the car, you can be pretty sure thats all thats wrong with it.

I've never driven one, although I have tried very hard (and I will have the oppourtunity later this week when the coil pack is put into this one).

From all I have read, both here and elsewhere, I get the idea they go like a bat out of hell.

    It's a really hard choice.

While I can afford to buy the car as is, I'm really scraping the bottom of the barrel to fix up the gearbox, let alone the cost to get someone else to do the heater core for me.

Fun and fast factor are nice, but the budget is getting a little out of hand. If it was just the heater core, I could live with that, but the gearbox isn't really something I can ignore for any length of time now is it

How about someone buys my 79 GLD and I'll be that much closer.

I'm now widening my search a little more to include the 2L GL models.

Does anyone have any comments on how these perform or anything to watch out for?

I have also noticed a lots of Polo's including some later 90's models which seem to be pretty cheap, albeit in 1.6L form... At the end of the day I much prefer the Golf Any reason the Polo's are so cheap?

So for the moment my options are:

    1. Keep looking for a good Mk2 GTi or similar
    2. Look at Mk3 2.0L GL's
    3. Consider the VR6 with it's faults (or find another one).

    Sleeping on it didin't help

You need something in between like the MK3 16v someone was selling not long ago.

Nice colour it was too. Could be still up for sale

This one has just come up too:

From what you have said, aussieg60, I assume the stock GL version is an 8v?

Still it looks like a straight little vehicle.
