Is there any reason (or benifit) in getting the K&N Pod over getting the stock air box? And the reverse, is there any benifit in the stock box?

The stock airbox is restrictive. The inlet is smaller then the outlet. This is bad.
A Pod filter is best, but K&N sark. Best to go BMC or if you're feeling rich: a BMC CDA filter (for the win).
Who are BMC you ask? Why... the manufacturer of air filters for the Ferarri and McClaren F1 teams (amongst others).
For the lights: You can check if they're Hellas by looking on the front glass, there should be a Hella logo somewhere.

The simple conical filters look about the same between brands, the BMC VAS filters looks better, but I'm sure it comes at a price.
Also where and how much?
as for CDA... looks shiny, but are we really talking much difference here?

I did the rego change over at the RTA today (oh how I hate the RTA, I remember now why I don't go to Campbelltown RTA...)
Swapped my own plates onto the VR6 from the Mk1, mind you the Mk3 looks like it should have some sort of mouting bracked for number plates, which of course I don't have. The previous owner had drilled some extra holes through the centre of the number plates, something I didn't want to do.
After hitting Autobarn, AutoPro etc etc and not finding anything but frames and things that attach to the front, I ended up at Bunnings buying a sheet of aluminium.
With the help of a dremel (is there anything it cant do) I now have fabricated my own mounting bracket. Plates are on the car and I'm happy.
Still need to take it to the autoelec to have a look at the AC, get the window tinting fixed up, then, funds depending I will have a look at getting the heater working.

Nice looking Vr6! Black with black leather looks great. I'd be getting that A/C fixed for summer though...
The headunit from the Mk1 has been moved to the VR6 as have the speakers, sure the ones in it already were half decent, but I only bought all this other gear a few months ago
The amp will have to be a weekend job when I have a little more daylight to work with.
The front splits need to be swapped out for something a little more... um... lets just stick with need to be swapped out. Will see when after the next few days expenses happen.
AC gets looked at tomorrow and hopefully it will be working. Spare key gets coded on Friday so we are almost there.
Waiting on a quote to get the window tinting replaced so I can see out without all the bubbles. I'm thinking 35% vis in the front (darkest legal) then 15% for everything else back.
Speaking of Windows, need to get the auto elec to fix up the wiring to the rear passenger window too. The motor is wired backwards so up is down and down is up... on big deal... except that if you hold the key on lock for too long it is supposed to wind the windows up... except that one goes down
After that it's reassess the finances and consider getting the heater working. Or anything else that comes to light.

Just on that key coding thing, where do you get them done and what's the damage $ wise?
We have two keys but would like to replace them. (worn and getting very thin and I have to keep straightening them when they twist)

I got my blank from McGrath VW (parts are on Moorebank Av) which was about $65 for the key with the light in it, apparently there is a non light version for about $10 or so less.
Cutting done at Mr Minit for $12.50 but prices will vary from place to place.
Coding is done by VW Service in Liverpool and is $126 and change PLUS they need the car for a few hour, a real pain when I live in Campbelltown and work in the city, getting it to them and picking it up can be a real hassle, but oh well, I need a second key!
Incidentally the guy at Mister Minit said he could provide a generic (ie no VW branded key) and code it for $170 (from memory) and he doesn't require the car, just the old key.
In your case you may get away with buying the new key blanks, then swapping the chips overs if you only want two keys. If nothing else, try once, if it fails you will still have one good key to use to get VW to reprogram your new keys.
