Mystery grinding noise in steering column

    Hey peeps!

My dub has developed a mysterious grinding sound in the steering column whenever I turn left or right. It doesnt make turning any harder, but it sure dont sound too healthy.

Any ideas on what it might be?

Only thing I can think of is I went to beach recently, maybe some sand got in there

Does it sound like its coming from the steering wheel end or the rack end of the column? I had a similar problem in an escort, back of the steering wheel was grinding dust and crap between itself and the steering column surround/clamshell.

That noise has been fitted as std on every MK3 I have owned. The box was ticked on the options list of the Toledo too.

If you take the wheel off, disconnect the battery if you have an airbag or you get a code thrown. It is safe to disconnect the airbag with power off. It's the yellow plug, on the ribbon cable.

    Ahhh good ole mk3s eh?

It's coming from the wheel end, not the rack. I'm not the most mechanically able person so I might be up for another trip to Golfwagen. Oh boy :\

It can be the bearing down by your feet on the column. Dont leave it too long, or you will need a new column also.
