If you find a cheap mechanically good VR6, with a ropey body, let me know.
I have a very clean white 2 door tucked away, just needs a donor VR6.
Not the cheapest option, but its an exclusive club and you get to change all the annoying things like waterpipes and pump, a/c and heater matrix whilst the swop is underway.
Cheap VR6s are rarely bargains, especially if run on a shoestring budget.
If you are young and poor, get a 2L and enjoy minimal maintainace, cheap parts and there are lots of cheap good ones.

I was fairly tempted to buy a vr6. Theres a cheap one located in Melb atm, basically stock with 140,000 + reg. Nice zender front lip too but I've heard some horror stories about maintenance costs & repairs. Economy isn't all that fantastic either, if I were you..I'd look into a gl.
Look man, my VR cost me a little extra than a gl/cl to keep on the road.... Yeah maintenance cost are more and there is no way in the world that you can keep a VR running on a $2 budget . But in saying that if he takes his time, does not buy the first one he see's (unless its a minter) & has a bit of knowledge about the mk3/VR6 he should be fine . I have 2 VR's, i have no horror stories to tell and would not swap my VR for any other mk3.... but hey thats just me

Hey guys!
So I am reviving this thread because I still haven't bought a Vr6, I am hopefully a new owner by the end of this week to a black 98 model, manual, 220,000kms, years rego, etc etc. Can't wait to get it, should be fantastic.
Owner says it has had timing chain, brakes (F & R), and many other bits and pieces done, so I think I got a good deal.
I better not speak too soon, hopefully all goes well and I get it soon. I'll let you guys know when I get it!
At the moment, the things I will re-check when I see the car again next/pick it up is...
-All windows works
-AC/Heater works
-Engine sounds okay
I hope these cars are easy to work on, I am sure I can find some parts on my VR6 that could do with a spruce up/replace by a cheap donor VR6...
Any advice, throw it my way as I am keen to hear what you guys think.
Cheers
well guys, got it today, looks, sound, performs great! Only downside is a member PM'd me and said it might be a piece of **** because it has had lots of owners...i am going to get it checked out properly with a big service done.
Any advice on particular things needing attention on a VR6 in terms of servicing?
Thanks.
hey guys,
So I got the car and had it a few days, goes great! Really liking it. I am in the process of doing the airbox mod, I have pulled out all off the airbox stuff and have degreased the engine bay and given it a thorough cleaning, all I need to do now is just dremel out the airbox and reinstall it with the K&N panel filter I ordered yesterday.
I had a good peak around the engine bay with a few friends and it is in need of a few things.
Called up VW today and ordered the following:
-Oil Filter
-4.5L of the G12 Coolant
-Power Steering Fluid
-Engine Oil
-Engine Mounts
-Serpentine Belt
This came to over $1000. With the power of "eff it", I ordered it all. I will do all of this on the weekend
How much engine oil and coolant will I need?
Thanks!
6lts of oil and about 10lts of fluid 50/50 mix water and g12
seriously man why would you buy from the stealers ??? $1000 bucks wont get you much .

Yeah, if you were to buy those things through anything but the dealers it probably would be well under half that price, for future reference.
you have enough coolant, mix it with demineralised water. You can mix it 2:3 coolant to water unless it gets particularly cold where you are
