    Red face My New Ride

    Hey All

    My search for a car has ended and i still have my dignity in tact! I picked up a 1996 VW Golf CL and i couldnt be happier.

    Found it on carsales the day i was about to Pay for a ....... *takes a breath and prepares for embarrassment* A...... 1995 holden Barina GLI. thought the advert was a bit of a joke due to the listing price of $3200 was the same price as the Barina.

    The pros:

    * Front tires have just been replaced.
    * 16" Rims
    * CD player
    * 3 months rego
    * Full service history
    * New Batterie
    * Manual (Easy as hell to drive has a good gear box)
    * tidy interior

    Now for the Cons:

    * Has 184000Km (the price kinda reflects this)
    * Paint is a bit average on the roof(looks like it had roof racks on it i will post some pictures at some stage), rear and front bumper paint is flaking off a bit not sure if this is a common thing.
    * rims are a bit battered.
    * Fuel Gage isnt working (have been told to give the dash a bit of a hit and see if that fixes it)
    * sometimes when you start the car the immobilizer kicks in and you need to take the key out flip it upside down and then start the car again.

    Now that i have it i want to mod it but i dont think i will do a great deal with this one due to being under 25 and insurance costs. I'm looking at putting some king springs in and a rear sway bar, was also looking at chucking in one of those Ebay Chips that I've seen a couple people talk about. think that will be about it... for the moment.

    Looks like a nice standard ride to start with there mate.
    Problem with the car not starting sometimes and having to try again sounds like a dodgy ignition switch (had the same problem in my GL). $20 and half an hour swapping it over solved it all!

    For the price of King Springs, your better off picking up some second hand Euro/US springs and shocks, or spend the bit extra and get some coilovers.

    Your already on a winner having a CL and no electric windows, less problems to come across with them!

    Have a good look around the MK3 section, you will find plenty of nice cars/examples/inspiration and ideas of how to get the Golf looking its best

    Congrats on the purchase.

    I have some german H&R lowering springs in great condition that would be much better and cheaper than local King Springs. If you're interested, send me a PM. Would only be a few dimes to courier to Adelaide.

    Could you explain how an H&R spring is better and than a King Spring.

    Nice work mate! Good to see another CL member

    Just spend some time cleaning here up and lower it i'd say.

    The 1.8ltr single point injection is a pretty slow donk and you would need seriouse $$$ to make it go hard. I dont even think they make an eBay chip for the ADZ engines aswell.

    And as sugggested save a bit more for something better than king springs.

    I think it's pretty generally acknowledged that German made springs are superior to locally made King springs. For a start, they're engineered specifically for the Mk3 and the coils use superior technology to the locally made products. There's no comparison. King springs are probably ok for locally made cars.

    Thanks Lorenz I'm pretty stoked with it specially for $3k.

    I spoke to my local VW dealer and they said the key may just need to be recoded/key replaced but that is going to set me back alot more than a dodgy ignition switch.

    I think I found one ebay chip I could get it was about $80 or something the seller said it will work with my engine but not sure how true that is.
    I dont think i will be doing a great deal performance wise for about 2 years sadly but i have some plans when i do wouldn't mind putting a 3.2L M3 engine in not so sure it would fit in the block though

    Nice pick up with that car mate.
    I`d keep an eye out for a smashed VR6.
    You can do the full conversion pretty easy and end up with a 2 door VR6.
    I would try the ignition switch before the key recode. Try lifting the key when it wont start. If it then works, its the ignition switch.
