Grab a machine polisher and some cutting polish then go nuts. Just mask up any black plastics before you start so you don't burn them. Unless there is a chemical alternative.

Well, I have started the long slow process of removing the black, but was distracted temporarily today with this little project:

Cut about 40mm off the shaft, so its a little bit shorter as well, feels great to shift and pretty happy overall!

excuse dirtyness of car, it will be rectified tomorrow! Poscas are not for graffiti either, i got them to draw on my boards.

looks the goods mate..... i got two of them sitting in the garage, one like that and a wood one that is for a GTI. Been wanting to install one for a few weeks now but i always forget to do it when i have spare time . Is it a must to chop down the shaft ?

It's not essential to cut it down, but if you don't it's actually a fraction longer than the stock shifter, which is the opposite of what you want in a shifter.(longer throws). But if you don't want to irreversibly modify it I guess leave it as it is! I have to admit attacking it with a hack saw felt weird!!

It's not a must I didn't chop mine. People chop the shaft to make it sit lower as it sits 10mm higher than stock or so I've heard.. Mine didn't have the stock knob so I can't personally compare

Any exterior pics? I'm really keen to see this unpeeling in the process.

I think you'll have to chop a bit out of your shifter for the Mk4 knob AND shift boot to fit. Otherwise you might not be able to reach reverse.

yeah ray has a point, anyway I chopped mine and I'm very happy with the results - could have chopped a bit more even I think!

The pics of the paint underneath will come soon!

Updates on no updates, I have been very slowly polishing black paint off so no pics yet! I have also found my dream wheels, just have to wait a couple of months before I can get them. Gold bolts for my volks will be arriving next week from TM so hopefully will have my wheels together soon!
