The manual also describes the need to clamp off the coolant hoses leading to and from the transmission fluid cooler unit during the removal process, so I assume that they are the coolant hoses that you are looking at.

Yep, that would be them.

Am a bit annoyed that all the coolant hose kits available don't state that they are for manual only cars.

Now I either get auto hoses or cut the ones I have and make appropriate stainless steel T pieces, so I can join the additional hoses for the AT.

Might complain first and see where that gets me.

From wikipedia, not sure if accurate; "VW produced the 096 four-speed for Mk3 Golf/Jetta cars from 1992-1994."
Mine is 1995 so 01M if we go by that. I haven't seen the dipstick so must be the filler hole method.
I found this DIY video a while back, looks easy enough. OEM parts (excluding oil) are around the $100 mark.

Believe Fenix74 was correct, stating 01M from Feb 1995.
You'd notice the dipstick if you had one, is red!
Also thought the DIY service is reasonable, meaning not too hard or expensive :)

My cover has 4 bolts and some kind of plastic red plug with a U fastener through the transmission.
Also, so much grease in the cover surprised the USA didn't come invade.

Give them time, they probably can't afford to invade until I give them more money for VW parts ;)

Today I fitted up some replacement tail light seals, thank you Stefcio007.

Removed the leads and plugs and fitted new plugs.
Went to fit the leads but they are wrong and for a passat, so getting swapped for correct ones on Monday.

Then I fitted a replacement TCM and tested the heatercore for leaks with a garden hose.
Not one drop of water in the cabin. Think I may be lucky!

I've ordered some T pieces and some hose to modify the coolant hoses to suit an automatic transmission, a lead removal/install tool and a replacement airbag controller.

Once these parts arrive, I will be able to fit, put the car back together and do a road test.

Then I think I'll be doing a gearbox service and replace the sump gasket and plug while I'm there.

Hoping that is all it needs, with the exception of some replacement panels as they become available.
