That foam box is your central locking pump!
Make sure you do not disconnect those air lines, otherwise your central locking will not work!!!
The whole system runs on a vacuum and hose system to all the doors and locks!
I have a couple more questions about the Mk3. Firstly, how do you get the original head deck out of the golf if you dont have the hook things to get it out with (the things that go in the slots at the sides)?
Secondly, there is this box thing covered in foam with wires coming out of it in my boot....it has been there since I got the car, and I have no idea what it is...I have attached some pics.... if anyone can tell me what it is that would be great

If u dont have the hook tool u can take the whole deck + vent trim out. You pop the 3 air vents off on the drivers side and middle section then u should see some screws on the top right/left of each vent. Undo those. Take off the two blank plastic trims on the left of the drivers wheel and there should be another screw to take off. There might be one more set of screws on the other set of blank pieces i cant remember. Once that is undone u can proceed to pop the plastic trim in front of the dash cluster (just use a little force). Then the whole radio/vent section will come off.
would prefer not to pull the whole dash off as it sounds like a lot of work and don't want to break anything. If I took it to an audio instaler do you reckon they would pop it out for me?
I didn;t even know there were tools for the OEE head unit. I had my fingers in the casset slot and wiggled it out. Have you tried a coat hanger, paddle pop stick ? From my understanding the hook tool is only there to unclip the mechanism.
An audio installer would definitely take it out for you. Don't know how much though!
I had a quick go at trying to remove mine before with a pair of metal rods that come with new Pioneer headunits to remove them from the casing easily and they kinda fit in the holes of the stock headunit. If you have them at the right angle, you can pull the stock unit out, i got mine half way out pretty easily!

I use a coat hanger to push in those hooks. take one of those flexible metal coat hangers you get from the dry cleaners. cut a small section and bend it in a U shape. presto!
