Thanks Andy - and I fully understand your thoughts. But as well as a cruiser it's also my daily driver on a 110kms round trip to work. Don't want to spend $30-50k on an Eos 2.0T or an M3 convertible, so just want to make the dear old girl a bit more satisfying to drive.

Also note the suggestions about engine transplants and confess I'd just love to drop in a chipped 1.8T or better still, a 2.0T with a DSG (seriously dreaming now!). But then, unlike what I'm currently planning, these wouldn't come in for $10k complete including the car.

Meanwhile, since Dave + spanner = disaster, can anyone recommend a specialist in Melbourne or preferably on the Mornington Peninsula who'll supply the bits and do the work for me - probably coilovers, engine/gearbox mounts, poly bushes, braided brake hoses, cam + pulley + new cambelt, CAI, stainless exhaust, service?

I wouldn't do poly bushes, having done all that stuff in years gone by. You should stick to rubber IMO. The rear axle ones wear out reasonably quickly and go slack. Better to fit new std ones. They'll last as long as you have the car. For the front wishbones, fit the bushes from the MK1 TT/S3.

I have these in my Ibiza and rate them pretty good. Poly squeaks and then they go slack after a while.

Is there a simple fix for the heater control knob lights only working when they feel like it - or sometimes coming on only if you hit them, Basil Fawlty style?

So, a few months on, still got the old girl and already got a K&N. Yeh!!
Another $500 available soon so what should I do next?

If you're not looking on doing things like lowering, new wheels etc, you could always use the money for refreshing up bits and pieces of the car. Shifter bushings, suspension mounts/bushings/bearings, a good detail...
