mk3 vr6 shifter loose

yo, just wondering if anyone knows if im missing somthing from my shifter linkage, the bolt as you see below slips through a bracket and is tightened by a nut on the otherside or beneath if looking from above. anyway it slides across the bracket with the bolt and nut tight therefore links straight to the shifter making it loose forwards and backwards. sorry if my explanation is hard to understand.

Take the bolt out and put a huge washer on it too. Vw says to tighten 11ft/lbs. But just tighten till you like the shifter feel in car.
