    Mk3 TDI Engine Vibration/ Noise

    Hi

Do any of the Mk3 TDI owners on here have an intermittent engine vibration in the car around idle?

It comes on more when you put your foot on the brake and/or turn on the head lights, so when there is a power drain on the battery? - not sure why this would be? With aircon it goes away

Also there seems to be a band between 1200 and 1400 rpm where there is alot of vibration from the engine overall - is this normal for the 1.9 TDi?

This vibration comes through to the cabin

    Thanks

likely you have a worn accessory belt tensioner. they are available new. could also be worn engine mounts (very likely in a 10-15 YO diesel car). loos accessory belt will cause all kinds of funny harmonics. when you turn the a/c on, the ECU increases the idle a couple of hundred rpm, and also the extra load on the belt will cause the tension side of it to tension up a lot, which can stop some vibration.

yes mine does the same vibrations around idle, not sure about the vibrations at 140 into the cabin, never notice it. As I have always driven diesels (apart from a terrible foray into petrol Barinas which we nicknamed the Gutless Wonder cos you wonder where the power is!) I am probably more used to noises from the engine particularly around idle and low revs. Might check the accessory belt tension too.

Probably engine mounts. THose cars are renowned for it.
Replace all 3 mounts with VR6 ones is my advice.

Countless things on these things cause vibs and are common IMO. Aux pulley tensioners, harmonic balancers are also common. Got to watch with the engine mounts what you choose as they can tend to cause more vib feedback.
