LOL... car started 1st go this morning... typical.
still i ordered a new ignition switch.
will install it after work or on the week end for her.
So my sister rings me to tell me the TDI won't start. turns key and nothing - no sounds of starter or any starter clicking.
Get there and every thing looks good - no fuses blown, warning lights on dash light up ok, VCDS reports nothing from the 3 control boxes.
Sounds like the ignition switch behind the key barrel is FUBAR.
Also saw Pmk's thread http://www.vwwatercooled.com.au/foru...diy-79951.html
Don't feel like pulling out another steering column...
Can the ignition switch be replaced without taking out the steering column? ie just the switch/ignition/stalk section around the column?
So anyone know how much to get a replacement?
And who would have one in stock?
Cheers

To answer your question, no. THere is no way to getting to the ignition switch without removing the steering column. It won't cost you much to replace it's just the distinctive labour that is the tricky part.
AND with your sisters TDI starting up today, that's exactly what happend to mine. It didn't matter much to me that it didnt start then restart again after a while but then it gradually got worse and then just didnt start at all. That's how it starts.
So i recommend replacing it when the part comes. PM me if you have any other questions while my brain is still fresh ! haha
Build and learn, not buy and earn.
Picked up the switch after work.
Installed it tonight.
Yeah the steering column support has a tube that goes right up into the lock mechanism and yep you have to pop the steering column out.
Yep it was easy
Putting it back in was pretty easy... as i already has experience doing a 6n Polo 2 years ago.
Tip, left hand holds the universal knuckle off the firewall and metal brackets behind the brake pedal, use your head and right hand to knock up and push down on the steering wheel as you wiggle the knuckle till it slips in.
Old switch has a nice crack! LOL
