    Mk3 Golf OBDI/OBDII socket locations

simple question but I don't know and can't find the answer and could do with finding out quickly.

When did the Mk3 golf go from OBDI to OBDII? and most importantly where are the sockets, I want to Scan some potential purchases on the weekend with Vag-Com.

I've seen an OBDII connector behind a panel next to the ashtray - is that true for all OBDII Mk3 golfs?

Is the ODBI connector in the same place?

the OBD port is behind a sliding cover next to the ash tray.
    pull ash tray out
slide the cover towards the ash tray opening.
