mk3 cl Noise on turning wheel

    Hi guys.

Car I have just bought 1998 CL GOLF manual, makes like a rubbing sound when turning the wheel. Guy who I bought it off said that mechanic told him it was the airbag rubbing or something similiar like that. He had it fixed but then it did it again.

Is this common and if so is it an expensive fix?. What will happen if I drive it like this? e.g will it F it up?. The noise is definitely from the steering colum/wheel.

    Thanks!.

    Hi mate,

I've had this exact problem in my VR6, just behind the steering wheel there is a copper piece that rubs from the steering wheel to the steering column. what happens is that dirt and crap gets in there and causes the rubbing noise. all you need to do is get a rag and clean the dirt out, you don't need to take the wheel off or anything, just be careful of that bit of copper.

    EDIT:got some pic's

The first pic is the area that that i'm talking about

The second pic is the copper thingy you need to be careful of, this photo was taken from under the indicator stalk.
