On a 97 2litre Golf the timing is done by the crank angle sensor, not the distributor. I have actually had one running with the hall sender disconnected, didnt drive it tho. There are normally 2 pegs to stop the dizzy from being turned. I am not sure wots going on with the pinging but await the outcome. If you turn the dizzy maybe the air gap is too great between the rotor & lugs in the cap?
