MK2 gearbox into MK3

Hey guys

My mate has a MK3 Golf GTI with l-jetronic injection and his gearbox is buggered up!! The casing has cracked and you can see the diff and gears!! Anyway, Ive got a mk1 golf that had a mk2 gti 1.8 8v engine and gearbox put into it a while ago and seeing as it hasnt been driven in a long time, I was thinking we could put my gearbox in his car. Is it a straight swap? Ive heard of issues with the clutch and the speedo cable? Also, would my distributor work on his car? Apparently his has been playing up?

PS I think the engine and gearbox was from an mk2 gti but Ive read that none of the mk2 gtis were kjet? So im guessing my engine and gearbox is actually a mk1 gti 1.8???
