Hi
I have a Mrk3 Golf and it making a noise from the engine bay that is like constant road noise.
This noise starts at about 40klms,could this be a wheel bearing on the way out or a CV joint???
Any information would be helpfull.
Cheers
Derek

You can test CVs by doing circles on full lock in both directions. This will put the most stress on the duff one and it should knock the loudest.
My gut feeling is a bearing. while the noise is present make a note of whether it gets worse when turning left or right. Usually when there is no/less weight on the duff bearing it goes quieter.
Gavin
As Gavin said, a bearing will make noie when there's a load on it. The best way to test for a faulty bearing is to turn at higher speeds (ie around a 45km/h corner at about 50-55), shifting the weight of the car more to one side. If you notice that while turning either way, a noise stops sounding, then it will be the bearing of whichever wheel isn't weighted (so if you're steering right and the noise goes away, your right wheel - which has no load on it - will be the one with the bearing making the noise).
And also, bearing noises get louder and higher pitched as you go faster. They can start at about 20km/h, and get increasingly higher pitched and louder until even 120. With my bad wheel bearing at the moment, it's got flat spots where at certain speeds you can't hear it.

I thought you replaced all your bearings Mickey?
We had a strange noise coming out of the missus Corolla, ended up being the hub nut not being tight enough, you could check that too. Of course I checked EVERYTHING else first

Forever blowing bubbles.
Oh, that sounds crazy. Hub nuts are a very important thing...
Um..yeah..I replaced all the bearings. All 5 of them..the 5th being the left rear I had to re-replace because I'm retarded and didn't do it up tight enough/it flogged out. The rear right is now in the same boat.
