Yeah personally I'd be looking at second hand wheels, but there are plenty of cheaper brand new "replica" wheels and such you can buy in the price range. As Dylan asked, are you 4x100 or 5x100? (Is it a 4 cylinder or a vr6?) If you have questions about what will fit and whatnot, I, along with a lot of other people on here who know there stuff, will be more than happy to help
I think 16's are pretty much the sweet spot for wheels on a mk3 if you don't want to be completely slammed, although 17's can work nicely too and take away some of the wheel gap, making the car look a little lower even if it is as stock 4wd height. 15's look pretty small when not really low, and even then, they still look pretty small.

15's always look small Ben... haha 16's is where its at but 17's can also work. If i was you id look through the forsale section on here or on vwgolf.net
Either way id recommend second hand over new unless you are willing to spend big $ and you know exactly what you want , size width offset tyres.
16's go well with a 40,45,50 profile tyre depending on the width of the rim
17's go well with a 40 profile also depending on width of rim
As Dylan said rolling the guards doesnt really have anything to do with the size of the wheel it all depends on where the wheel sits width wise and how high your car is.

Wow cheers guys, well ive got a GL with a 2.0l 8v so im running 4x100 PCD on there. Yeah ive been scouring the second hand market on gumtree for ages but had no real luck :| but i will try some more on here and vw golf net, i really dont want to give my golf anything less than the best but i just thought reps was the best i could get with my price bracket, i would love to go 17s but my dads not seeing eye to eye with me, seeing as im still on my L's he thinks there either going to be stolen or attract to much attention from old bill
Thank you guys ever so much for the help sorry for being such a nuisance :/ ahaha just want wheels and dont know what to do

You can get rep bbs' on eBay for $990 in a variety of sizes any pcd and any offset, though have a few widths.
-
4x100 should make it easier. Whenever I look for wheels it seems that anything good comes in any size beside 5x100.
If you don't mind reps check out a site called otomoto. They're an Australian shop with bbs and borbet reps from $165 a wheel and they do a package with tyres for like $900. Couple different widths too. I wanted a set but they don't stock anything in 5x100

Cheers i will check that out now
well every time i look on gumtree i always find 5 studs and even when i find a wheel with 4 studs i enquire to find out that they are 4x114.3 :/ bloody japanese cars ahaha

Spend some time researching ideal wheel specs for your car before you pull the trigger online. Key things to consider are offset and centre bore, easiest way would be to buy some from someone on here in the classifieds who has already run the setup on their car.
-
Yeah well i know the PCD and the bore is 57.1 i believe on the mk3's and im thinking of an offset of about +20ish on an 8inch wheel so its flush on the rear and maybe poking a tad on the front, i think thats how it would equate :/, but the more i think about it the less i want to risk it unless im 100% sure, but i never thought about the classifieds on here or any other golf sites until someone mentioned it before, so im going to be watching them throughly now

Can keep an eye on ebay too, just type in 4x100 or something and see what there is, just be sure to triple check specs to make sure they'll fit nicely, you can find some pretty crazy specced wheels with the right offsets for jap cars which just wont work on ours.
You can check how much theyll poke and such compared to your stock wheels on here:
http://www.willtheyfit.com/
Stock mk3 steels are 14x6 et45
Something like these may fit alright, although not sure about to centrebore http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Volk-17-R...#ht_500wt_1287
Or I think these could look pretty sweet on a mk3, and those specs are pretty pefect (in my opinion anyway) although again, not sure on centrebore http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/Rota-Grid...#ht_500wt_1054

Well thats a bit creepy aha i drove vision r with my dad the other day and checked them rota's out, i spotted them a while back on the net, got a quote of $1270 for the wheels, tyres and fitment. Im not sure though, the shop selling them looked a little bit on the dodgy side of things but im not sure if they will suit and what not? Whats your opinion? my mk3's white and not lowered as of yet, but i think they would look alright with a bit of poke i believe? seeing as they have an ET of 20? im also feeling the bronze though, bit of something different? or has it been done a million times before :/
