Length of cable to reach boot?

    Hey guys,

Imma be putting a couple little audio things in the boot of the golf and before I order am just wondering how much cable people have had to use to reach the boot.

The set of rca cords (to run from the head unit to the boot) I plan on getting are only 4m long. I've gone out there with a bit of string and had a quick measure and think that this should reach, but it's hard to tell without actally running it through the dash and all.

Am also not sure how much power wire I should order (to run from the battery to the boot as well) and am thinking that 6m should do (this includes a short bit for a ground as well). This cable almost costs me an hours work per meter so don't want to order more then is required, but definately dont want to be just a little short.

So anyway if anyone's put an amp in the back of there mk3 and happens to have a decent memory, I'd be very interested in how much cable (both rca and power, I'll be running rca down the drivers side and power down the passenger) you needed to reach the boot. Ill be mounting my amp on the back of the back seats (well that sort of area atleast)

    Thanks

Oh and also if anyone knows the best place to take the power cable through the firewall, that would be helpfull as well. I've seen a few different places that people have done it on these forums, but if one happens to be better/wastes less cable then I'd be happy to hear about it.

4 metres is usually enough for RCA cables.

Buy 5 metres of power cable. If there's enough, use the rest for the ground, if not, just buy one of those already-made earth cables you can find at auto shops.

There's a hole on the firewall under the coolant bottle somewhere. Some cars have a rubber grommet that already has a hole in it, some have a corkboard-like covering over it which you can pop out. It reaches down to the passenger footwell. I reckon that's the best part of the firewall to go through as it's on the same side of the battery, and is the shortest route.

    alright thanks ray.

Have had a couple looks at the firewall and tried to follow the wire for the amp thats already in there (theres an amp which is litterally less then useless, producing less then half the power my head unit will supply, connected up with much dodgy 16 year old wiring haha) but the vr6 engine bay is a bit packed

Have just had a change of plans and will be going with a kit for the amp which will have 6m of power and then a ground, so that should be more then enough. Will stick with the 4m rca's as getting a good price on those.
