Its time to fix this damned central locking...

Since i bought the car, central locking has never worked. Now, its starting to annoy me, and i want to track down the problem and fix it so i can work on keyless entry.

Ill give the facts and then im hoping by this someone can point me in the right direction... I hope...

Hose was disconnected from pump. I reconnected it. Nothing.

All doors lock open and closed (doors), except for the drivers side, which only locks when the door is shut, i cant push the button down when it is open.

Since reconnecting the hose at the back on the pump, when locking doors theres a delayed "umf" sound but nothing more.

Its been looked at about 6 months back but nothing was found.

If someone could give me some pointers to help that would be great. If you have any questions to ask to assist me ask away, my car is about half a meter away

ps the wiring in my car is horrible, the old owner must have had no idea what he was doing. I would be surprised if its something obvious like a wires been cut, but even then ive checked everything twice to make sure its not that.

If the pump runs in the boot for more than about 5 seconds then you have a air leak...usually at one of the door joints behind the rubber boot where the wiring runs..VDUB...

It wont even run for that long, in-fact id say it doesnt even run. Im thinking it could be the actual pump unit itself because it doesnt really sound like its doing anything. But i want to make sure that its defiantly the issue, because i dont want to be throwing away 100$ if it isnt the problem.

Its been years since ive worked on a vac pump locking system but from memory they either had a air leak or the pump was buggered... cant remember what the wiring was like now but guessing quite simple. Make sure you have a main power and earth to the pump and some sort of actuation feed when trying to lock the car

I think the reason why the old motor doesnt work could be because the motor burnt out as a result of a hole in the vacuum line. Its a guess, but ill investigate in the morning and confirm. It could simply be a dud motor, as simple as replace and play, or it could be more complicated. I hope its as simple as the motor, i wouldnt be too fond of spending a day finding a tear in the line.

From memory, the pump will not run any longer then about 5 seconds, it will take 1 second to lock if the system is air tight, if there is a leak it will run for about 5 and then stop (preventative measure against burning out perhaps).

I see you are in sydeny, i am sure someone can lend you a pump or simply plug your mump into antoehr car and you can check if its the pump. I know seat ibiza's have the same pump system so you could get one from them as well, same as mk2 golf.
