A car that would not run with out a filler cap! wow. Thanks for the reassurance. Plenty of little oddities in Golfs just to keep you interested.

On a related note, I have another question which I cannot easily answer for myself. I replaced the breather pipe that comes out of the cam cover. The section from the crankcase to the had rotted away. Now it seems to me that the motor is running better. Specifically it seemed to be picking up better at low revs, and was more difficult to get the motor to "ping". It is hard to be too specific, as there was a two day gap between the before and after drives, and being Melbourne, the temp is now 20 C lower. But could the breather pipe make a noticable effect on the tuning?

Replaced the window regulator over the weekend too.. I did not realise quite how much it had been frustrating me. Is the any fine tuning that has to be done? I just dropped the window into the rubber mounts and tightened. First few times i tried the window, it was sometimes raising to a certain point and then reversing back down.. presumably a safety mechanism.. did not have time to investigate further, and it has not done it since i put the door back together. Is there fine tuning that needs to be done on the regs, or should it be ok now?

Thanks for the time, much appreciated as ever.

BTW, a friend who owns a Subi STi took the golf for a spin, and commented that the gear shift was better than in his car! I thought notchy gear shift was a problem with MIII golfs!!

With the regs, better to do up the mechanism in the door but leave the two bolts on the window loose. Go up and down a few times till it finds its onw place and then tighten. If you dont, it will kill your new regulator

Thanks Golf Loon, will pull the door apart (yet again) and fix that up, I so dont want to have to replace that regulator ever again..

Got another question actually.. cruise control.. engages (sometimes) works for a couple minutes, then just cuts out.. wont restart.. other times just wont work at all.. assume it is a loose connection, but does anyone know where?

    cheers

I haven't ever looked at cruise on a MK3 but I would think there are a couple of things that would cause it to drop out. Pressing either the brake or the clutch for starters. Both must have a switch on the pedals for that. So that's one place to look.

    Might just be bad adjustment?

    thanks H100VW, sensible starting points..

last time had a problem with a cruise control, it was a faulty connection in the control arm, so just assumed that this would be a similar problem (but I have only ever had one other car with cruise, so in my experience 100% of cruise faults are faulty wiring in the pod!!)

    cheers

bty, H100VW, see in another thread that you may have some experience in chipping the 2.0's?? If that is the case, what are the potential gains and how would that compare to say extractors/exhaust?

(it would seem now that the rehab program is underway, the quest for a little more oomph is warming up).

    cheers
