    Cam Belt Changing

    Hi All,

At my recently acquired 1996 Mk3 2L's 75000km service I was advised the cambelt had never been changed or there is no indication that it has ever been changed.

Being a slightly costly job I just thought I'd ask if it is a good idea to get it done even though I don't believe its due by Km's?

Also how urgently do you think I should change it? I was thinking of getting it done in the next 2 weeks. Thoughts?

You should do the waterpump at the same time with a metal impeller one.

I`d do it sooner, its suppossed to be 5 years or 100ks. If yours is original its time. If it was a 1.8 you could leave it, non interference motor. If yours snaps, valves get munched and it costs you more.

I read somewhere that in a UK survey, 75% of ex fleet cars that were examined had there odo's fiddled. Combine this with interference engines, and overdue timing belts ... bad mojo.

What's the deal with the digital dash modules - can you rely on them being tamper proof?

Well no more threat of valve munching now. $395 at Volksaffair, better that the $595 the dealership quoted.

Worked out well, I dropped the car off and went to a OHS convention at the exhibition centre just up the road.

If it were me I'd order in a kit from GAP US$90 gets you the timing belt, tensioner, stud, water pump w/ housing, serpentine belt& V-belt.

It's not an impossibly difficult task, but then I do change these a lot......

The waterpump is seperate from the cambelt and doesnt have to be disturbed at all. It takes someone with experience about an hour to replace the 2L mk3 belt. It is a very easy job. I wish that they were all like that!!!
If the waterpump plays up at a later date the cambelt doesnt have to be touched at all.
