How much to get a mk3 CL like this?

    Hey all,

I was flicking through the photos in the mk3 appreciation thread above and came across this one of a 1.8 CL.

What would be the costs involved in getting a car like this?

    mk3 golf CL ~$5,000
    Wheels ?$2k?
    Shocks/springs ?$1k?

Then insurance, like $800/yr? Just wondering if it will work out cheaper than buying a VR6 for ~$7k, as well as in terms of insurance/maintenance, etc.

I would imagine he's running decent suspension on there as he's fairly low. So maybe for something like that more than a grand after bringing it out here. I'm a bbs newb but I think those are RM's. Hard to find here I'm pretty sure. Looks like theyve been refinished and then painted. I think with tires as well you might end up spending over $2000.

The car is an english one and I've seen the before and after pics of it. The before pics don't even look like the same car, was a totaly ****box that he probably picked up for a under a thousand quid.

Even if you end up spending more than what you said in the original post I reckon you're on the right track with doing suspension and wheels first. I think cars with other mods done first look weird personally.

I actually thought they were Simmons wheels to begin with... I think you could get the same look with a set of Simmons wheels, which typically go for much less and are more easily acquired than a set of BBS There are a lot of springs/shocks/coilovers even on the market that can get you where you want to be, and I know for a fact that a few of us mk3ers have gone the cheaper option and we are all loving the ride. There's HotTuning for under 1k, there's always second-hand stuff to be looking out for; your options are pretty varied with suspension!

If you're not worried about lack of power from the CL, I'd say do it

Oh, and in my experience I'd say if you didn't want to bother fixing things on a VR6 then don't get one. They're worth it if you're into cars and you're willing to make sacrifices to get them running nice, but if you just want a decent daily with a good look then you would probably be much better off with less maintenance etc from a CL.
