Thread: high km's.

    high km's.

my 94 golf has nearly 220 on the clock. i brought her at around 215.
should this be of concern in any way? does she need any extra special attention?

also if you put in a new engine (new or reconditioned) does that restart your km's or does it have no effect? would a fresh engine do an older car any good?

fresh engine would do it good but it doesn't restart your mileage. don't forget, its not only the engine that moves the car. there is the drivetrain, electrical systems, suspension, brakes, interior etc. New engine will make sure you have no engine problems but there is no guarantee for the rest.

If your car is not breaking down, dont touch it.

Providing it's been taken care of, and you continue to do so, it could we last another 100 00 kms+!

But time takes it's toll on all things: drivetrain, suspension, electrics. basically anything that can be wore down, can (but doesn't nessecarily need to) be replaced at some time.

A 'fresh' engine isn't a cureall. but then engine will keep going, if nothing else!

It's a GL, those things are bulletproof.

My old one had around 190,000kms on it when it was written off, and I used to belt the crap out of it daily. Might need some belts changed... possibly the shift bushings.

That engine should easily make it to 300,000 kms with the right care.

    makes sense.
though she is a little smelly (burning oil?) to my sensitive nose when standing around the tail end and sometimes reversing. the previous owner told me the last oil change was done around 200k.

    what to do?

Change the oil and filter or get a mechanic to do it for you and drive on into the sunset.

350 is possible from that engine, they are strong as.....

    oil change would be good.

get it checked out, might just not be running properly (air/fuel mix) what's the econmy like? been bad lately.

Important to have is serviced regualirly, oil at least every 10,000Kms, imo. Get it scanned with VAGcom, that should let you know if anything is astray.

My GL 2l has 248k km's on it. No burning of oil, no leaks, runs as strong as ever. Change timing belt and waterpump, belts, oil and coolant if you dont have service history.
