Hi (New member and new to VW)

Hey!!!

Im new to this forums and i thought i say Hi.

Im a Sydney sider and been previously a Nissan Fan boy club since forever but since i have departed with my my beloved S15 and been lookin around for another car and what have really caught my eyes are VW Golf VR6 (MK4)

Since ive been searching ive noticed they range from anywhere to $8k-15k

I have found a 97" version with 89k travelled and with leather interior for $12k (rego expires in a few days) is that a good buy?

Can any1 send me some advice

*What do people think of them? over a CL & CL
*Since they are 6-11 years old what would i need to look out for when im shopping for one?
*What are the going price range for one
*has any1 got one for sale?

Hate to burst your bubble but the vr6 MK4 never made it here(I think you are talking about mk3 anyway).. only the mk3 vr6 which was sold ROUGHLY around 93-97 in Australia,someone with the exact dates will post better details soon.
I will also move this thread to MK3 where you will get a much better response!!

Yes you wont like the answer. They start at around 18k+ for early model ones and go right up. If it were me i'd prefer to get one slightly modded but they are easily 21-24k (theres even a really schmick one for 39k on carsales).

For the VR6 12k isnt bad since its got low k's and is the late model but you can find cheaper earlier models but just be wary of the ones that need alot of work like some of the fellas on here have found. But you definately cant go wrong with one (slightly biased but meh!).

joey,ive owned a vr6 when they were NEW and there is nothing like that v6 howl,but you have picked a bad time for buying one imo.most have been thrashed or not looked after or serviced correctly.PM GOLF LOON as he is our resident VW mech guru!!
if you can find a good example you will be smiling bigtime! but get a bad one,and the experience will be bad...

No doubt there will be a few VR6 owners on soon to steer you in the right direction, maybe I could sway you towards the MK4 GTI...

Just for the record, the VR6 you are talking about is a MK3, not a MK4.

Hey joey welcome here mate.
I think what I want to say has been covered, as peedmans posted, quite helpful. With the budget have,getting a vr6 is no worries, but as vr6 are steriotyped as money pit, it does live up to its name, so be warned. However, more importantly enjoy, you will love it.

I was aiming/lookin for a reliable car with minimal fuss.
I just wanted a nice/clean VR6 to start off with and then have it lowered with nice 17's rims and a exhaust.

Only a money pit if they havent been properly maintained, much like any performance car.

have it inspected and make sure they look at lower control arm bushes, strut tops/bearing, engine mounts etc.

any car with k's on it >150 you may be looking at replacing the clutch.

probably the best 3 questions to ask are:

Has it been regularly serviced
Has the clutch been replaced
Has the heater core ever been replaced

If no to any of the questions tread lightly.

My car had regular services some not at a dealer, the heater core is fine (touch wood), and at just under 200k on the clock when the clutch went.

It also was owned by a guy who obviously never gave it any stick as it blew smoke for a couple of weeks any time you pushed past 3500rpm hahahaha
