The other mechanic i took my car to last week found the culprit... Timing chain tensioner broke, and skipped a tooth on the front cam causing it to do what it did. Once he opened it up, had about 10-15mm of give on the chain... So a lot of money later and I should be back on the road next week, hopefully with nice compression and 0 hesitation

Ha too true, I've officially named the black beast "the money pit" now, I doubt if I'll get much change from 3k (not a nice bill to have straight after xmas), haven't got the final grand total, only cause there was a couple other things that I'm getting fixed up while its in bits. Didn't seem to bend any valves which is a good thing.

yr scaring me now, my timing chain has started rattling again - blamed it on thin synthetic oil for a while, how bad was the rattle before it skipped?

Mine rattled for quite a while, but I had one of the tensioners replaced when I had the head gasket go, so that bought me a bit of time. It was a couple months ago, it started to sound really bad. From what I've been told though, its one of those things you want to get sorted before it goes 'ping', as bad, bad things can happen if it does.

My vw had the same symptoms, i checked the leads time and time again thinking they were okay but alas they were arching / shorting on the head. I only noticed this when i had the car in the garage without any lights on.

Car popped and farted just like yours but once it got over 3 - 4000rpm it purred like normal.

ps. Cylinders 2, 4 & 6 are the front cylinders ie. kissing the radiator

Did make a big difference initially but then I realised there was more than one misfire going on at any one time. The car is running better atm, but is still missing below 2000. I'm going to order a new adjustable FPR and have that fitted along with some other things when I get the chance...

Have you pulled your plugs and checked them recently? Is there even colouring over all 6 cylinders?

Yeah I've had them all checked, no6 had the rubber damaged on the ignition coil side and was swapped with a lead from an odd set. The spark plugs have been changed recently under my ownership and leads themselves are quite new and look less than 12 months old, I have the receipt for them which confirms this. The spark plugs on the other hand, were by the build up of residue and white chalky deposits were either original or had been replaced near when the car was new. This was despite the two receipts in my possession which claim they had been replaced at least twice
