Help with dying VR6 - sell, repair, parts

I'm an Aussie who moved to Auckland where I purchased a 97 Auto VR6(120,00km $3,500nzd) about 8 months ago. You get a registered mechanic to do an AA test on it - either passes or doesnt. It passed but said some work would have to be done on it in the near future. After having it for a few months I took it to 2 mechanics who confirmed it had a patched up head gasket, the fans are constantly running to keep it cool(but this has caused me many flat batteries) and now the transmission seems to be losing the plot. Sorry if I dont get the wording right, I'm a young female who doesnt know a lot about cars..which is why i trusted the lovely seller(cough cough) and AA mechanic. I'm moving back to Australia and dont know what to do with it! It wont pass a WOF(warrant of fitness - legally need one of these to drive it)
Do I see how much it will cost me to get it in working order?
Sell it as is or is it only worth parts?
    Any advice appreciated
    K
