having trouble starting car

Just wondering if i could get some advice on what is wrong:/

My golf cl has been off the road for about 1 month 2 weeks so it hasn't been run properly for a while. Ive been starting it up occasionally and letting it run on the spot. After the first couple of weeks it had troubles starting up the first time but wasn't to bad, i always thought it was just the battery so i would charge it. Its having major problems now taking ages of cranking and trying to tap the accelerator if it luckily gets a spit of petrol? Got it running a few times today, when it hits high revs dosnt seem like a piston is firing properly. When the car is shut off for more than a few minutes its hard to start up again. spark plugs soiled or something wrong with the pump/ both?

also noticed in neutral if u rev it high u can hear a really high pitch metallic noise, not sure if thats normal

On a CL, its probably the rubber paseplate under the sindle point injection unit.

Grab the top of the "carby" and rock it back and for and see if the rubber is split.

I stock replacements if you need.

If its not that, it will be the single point unit itself, or the temp switch.

I doubt a scan will tell you much on that car.

Let us know how you go.

i rocked the carby back and forth and tried to see as much as possible of the rubber plate. it didn't seem to be cracked. is it worth going out today to buy some spark plugs to see if it helps?

could the jolting at high revs be a piston misfiring or fuel not getting pumped enough?

cause it has been sitting, dirt or water or both could have settled in the fuel tank. get 2 fuel filters. replace the fuel filter to clear the dirt (remember to undo the fuel cap so it doesn't squirt you in the face). Put a cup of methylated spirits in the fuel tank to dissolve the water back into the fuel and drive the car till the fuel tank is nearly empty and refill with 95 octane from mobil or bp. Replace the fuel filter again.

i had a problem with the cable from the relay to the stater motor in my cl, i fixed it by bypassing it, got a cable, and ran it through a hole just behind the glove box to a switch that i taped just by the left leg. the cable went straight between the starter motor and the battery, the button switch just conected the two and all was fine, starts reliably. and passed rego.

um, could also be a distributor cap, just had to replace mine, and is running fine, also, check the ignition coil up the top of the engine bay when running, there may be sparking across from from the coil to the metal of the car. i fixed that with some nail polish quite thickly spread around the protruding cylinder. this covered the minute hole and thus stopped the sparking,

all of these have stopped the problems for now, but dust and dirt do get in the jacket around the distributor so there may not actually be contact between the spindle and the contacts. and that may be all that is wrong with it.
