    golf VR6, problem ?

    Hello all
    I have recently caught the vw bug and brought my self a 1995 golf VR6, What a great little car they are.

    I brought it from a car yard up hear in Newcastle NSW with the only problem being a dead battery, or so I was told

    There seems to be a little oil leak at the top of the engine (I think its oil), I have pics below.




    I’m just wondering if this is in fact oil and is it leaking?....
    What is this part and what is its function ?....
    Is it expensive to fix, if indeed it needs fixing ?....
    Can it be fixed by someone with reasonable around the tools (me )....

    I noticed tonight that the pipe that the hose clamp is holding in position was a little loose so I tightened the clamp but im worried it could break something if its to tight or come flying off if its not tight enough.



    If anyone could shed any info on this it would be greatly appreciated, Or if you could recommend any good mechanics up hear (Newcastle) that I could go to. If need be I can always go to the local VW dealership and ask.

    i believe its just a rocker cover breather pipe. something like that. might have a valve in it.
    as far as vr6's go and vw's in general, it shouldnt be too expensive to replace.
    id go to a vw dealership and get the parts guy to come out and look at it, and get a price for it. i dont know where you'd get one second hand or if you'd even want a second hand one( id want to buy something like that new just so i know its got warranty if it ever did mess up).
    shouldnt be too hard to replace, just take that clamp off and pull off any other hoses attached to it and clamps and whatnot and put the new one on.

    might have somethng to do with exhaust gas recirculation now that i think about it, if thats a sensor plugged into the back of it.

    still shouldnt be too hard to replace, ill have a look tomorrow on mine.

    and yeah it will be oil leaking out. gasses from the rocker cover need to come out, and those gasses will have oil in them which eventually will eat through the rubber/plastic that those pipes are made of

    ps. personally i wouldnt bother fixing it untill it actually has an open hole in it, at the moment that just looks like its sweating oil or getting close to leaking, but should be ok untill there is a hole

    this called the PCV valve, you cannot buy that little air pump by itself, only with the whole intake pipe. You would be looking around the $300ish mark.

    Yeah that broken and basically what happens with that is, at idle it's blowing alot of oil and gas blow by. But as soon as you start running the car it becomes a vacuum, hence the air pump than blocks the air pipe.

    I have looked at replacing it with something else, but yet to come up with a solution.

    Regarding oil leak, under the car which side of the engine is it?
    If on the drivers side, might only be the PCV valve.
    If on the passengers side, most likely the Cam cover gasket.

    It is also possible it can be leaking around the back blocking plug which you can see on the side of the engine behind the airbox/air intake pipe.

    Ill see how bad it gets (at the moment not that bad) and if need be just replace it.

    My car has that bit of pipe replaced with straight pipe to the intake. The electric plug doesn't actually do anything (have a look where it plugs in, it's a blank) so it's all good.

    Has been running without issue for a long time, it's a common fix to a common problem

    mine broke as well so i disconnected the whole line and purchased an oil catch can from super cheap connected it up to where the pvc valve came from
    and now my throttle body is kept nice and clean

    This seems like a good way of fixing the problem, defiantly cheaper and most prob easier.

    Is there any chance of a photo of yours "mk3pete" ?
