Exclamation Golf 1997 1.8 CL ENGINE OIL LEAK !!!!!!

So i bought My golf a month ago .. when getting my Rego inspection done , it failed because they said it had Engine Oil leaks , now i just found that out yesterday on my inspection . . the car runs fine , i don't think that my water and oil are mixing .. the oil is not leaking in large amounts and the car runs just fine .. no lose of power , slight misfire (like a blow-up noise coming from exhaust and shows on RPM meter by going down by about 200 RPMs then back up) .. but it's the oil leak that's stopping me from getting my car Registered ..

the leak seems to be coming from the back from the engine .. i checked the front of the engine .. and it was squeaky clean how serious is the leak ?? and how much could it cost to be fixed ???

I've taken pictures of the bottom back of my engine as best as i could .. the oil is between the oil pan and the engine .. any ideas ?

Looks to be just the oil pan gasket. A gasket should not be to much (under $20 ?). If your mechanicaly minded its not to hard do it ya self.
Other wise an hour worth of labour for mechanic to do it.

nah, golf sump gaskets are rarely an issue.... it is far more likely to be the valve cover gasket. it'll leak at the back and just drip down all over tha back of the block, make a big mess and look far more serious than it is.

Check its not the rocker cover gasket. I had mine replaced, as it was just a little leaky

Also check the oil sensors and the half moon seal at the gearbox end of the head.
I agree that it is probably a rocker cover.
Clean the motor, with degreaser and a hose. Let it dry and then run it and let it get warm.
Then see where the oil comes from.

Guys look closely above the pan looks very dry, i think personally its the sump gasket, mate find someone with a good smoke machine and fill the crankcase with smoke it will tell you no lies mate, believe me save hrs of time. Best tool in my van. My smoker has fluro in it so leaves a yellow stain where the leak is
Looks like sump to me, if its a rego why havent you just cleaned it?? if you have it will be well obvious if its leaking bad
