Question getting stuck in 3rd gear?

    Hi,
trying to get some insight into a weird problem.. with 2nd hand wifes descriptions cause its intermittant...

my wifes 1994 gl auto golf mk3 seems to be getting stuck in 3rd gear. when she brakes, it "loses power" doesnt sound spluttery but wont accelarate away again.

    Turn off/on - all good.

Does it seem reasonable/possibe that the automatic is not kicking back to 1st/2nd? is it a sensor needs replacing? does it sound expensive?

I'm going to get her to manually change back to 2nd/1st next ime it happens.

    cheers

    3rd gear

Hi, you'll hopefully find it's either the ECU or the speed sensor, have you still got a speedo? I had exact same problem with Vento auto when speedo failed took the VW man 2 weeks to locate fault as I had several and he had to work through the diagnostics to remove fault code, second hand ECU was $250 and speed sensor brand new was around the $130 mark.

On and off is a basic reset. Thats driving in limp mode. Have it scanned. Could be ECU but depending on codes could be wiring or foil in the gearbox, certain faults will put it in limp which is generally 3rd Gear
