    gearshift shaft bush

    g'day -
on a 5-speed 4 cylinder, there is a bushing supporting the gearshift shaft, just ahead of the gearlever (this is inside the car, under the centre console)

mine is thrashed out & the shaft is wobbling around like a **** in the breeze

    but here's the question:

how does one remove the gearlever to remove the shaft?

the shaft can only come out towards the rear of the car

the gearlever passes through a loop on the shaft, and the gearlever can only come out through that loop downwards... but the housing is in the way

    ...help?

U sure its not one of the other bushes? Like the golf ball one, worn out will give u side to side play.

Mate you need to remove the Catalyst, then the heat shields to acces the mechanism. Ok common is the ball and socket at the base of the gearstick, the ball at the gear box linkage and the bearing bush in the bracket in the mount that sits on top of the steer rack , change all 3 and you will b set

yep, i'm also replacing the front bush for the shaft, within the bracket mounted on the gearbox

i've already replaced the vertical shaft/nylon ball arrangement held within this bracket - i think that's what you mean by "golf ball one"

the one i'm talking about is thrashed out completely; the shaft is not supported by it at all

bugger, i was afraid of that - no hoist, no wheel stands...

i can see within the car there is a stud up through the tunnel, in front of the shifter; i assume that holds up the shifter base mechanism, along with some other fasteners from below?

    Yup, like Jmac says.
Support car, on stands. Remove Cat converter, 17mm bolts on the one end and 13mm on the other.
Then prise out the clips and remove the heatshield.
Then 13mm bolts up to the floor and one from up above in the cabin in front of the gearshifter.
Undoo it from the front where you changed the linkage before.
Pull the mechanism out and change the bush.
You`ll need to set the gearlinkages again when its back together
    Have fun

PS Update your location, maybe someone is local and can help you.
